HOH 2011 Dressage League Qualifiers for January

The Hooked on Horses 2011 Dressage League gets underway this weekend, with Longwood Equestrian Centre holding qualifying classes this Saturday.

The Hooked on Horses Dressage League consists of two leagues; one at Prelim Level and one at Novice Level. The qualifying classes are open to all riders; whether you are a junior or senior; riding a dressage school master or if it is your first time doing a dressage test!

Competitors placed in qualifying classes win points depending on their placing – from 6 points for a first place down to 1 point for sixth. These points accumulate throughout the year until the end of the league on 31st December 2011. In addition, Hooked on Horses gives a special commemorative green and gold rosette to the winner of every qualifying class.

The winners of each league will win some fantastic prizes as well as a trophy. Prizes currently include training vouchers, riding attire and Hooked on Horses Merchandise. The 2011 Dressage League runs throughout the calendar year from 1st January 2011 until 31st December 2011. An up to date version of the league tables is published every month in Hooked on Horses magazine, and updated regularly on www.hookedonhorses.co.uk

The Top Ten Horse Films of All Time

What would you rate as the top horse film of all time? We have trawled back through the equine film archives to find some of the best films and if you haven’t seen all of them yet, you should!

In next months issue of Hooked on Horses, we are reviewing a new film being released in the UK on DVD for the very first time; Touching Wild Horses is a film about a young boy, sent to live with his Aunt starring Jane Seymour OBE, with no one for company except for wild horses. Equestrian fans will love this film for it’s representation of the wild horse, a beautiful loving animal. It’s available to buy on DVD, released in the UK on the 4th February.

THE HOOKED ON HORSES TOP TEN HORSE FILMS

Ten: RUNNING FREE 1999 

Set in Northern Africa at the beginning of World War I,Running Free is an unusual movie narrated by a horse, voiced by Lukas Haas. Lucky, as he is called, is born on an African-bound ship but is separated from his mother when the horses swim for shore and the new colt simply can’t keep up. While mum and the rest of the gang are sent to work in the mines, Lucky is discovered by a young orphan who works as a stable hand, and the film follows their relationship. Although the film is rated suitable for all viewers, horse death, graphic fighting and cruelty toward the boy might be overwhelming to young or sensitive children. This is a good heartwarming story that makes you laugh and cry. You can really feel for the foal at the beginning; this is a great film for horse lovers and for people who like happy endings.

Nine: ALL THE PRETTY HORSES 2000

Directed by Billy Bob Thornton, two Texas cowboys head to Mexico in search of work, but soon find themselves in trouble with the law after one of them falls in love with a wealthy rancher’s daughter The young Texan drifter named John Grady Cole, played by Matt Damon, seeks a better life in Mexico, but when he crosses the border, all he finds is adventure and hardships.

Eight: THE BLACK STALLION 1979 

Adapted from the beloved novel by Walter Farley,The Black Stallion is a 1979 family classic. Whilst travelling with his father, young Alec becomes fascinated by a mysterious Arabian stallion that is brought on board and stabled in the ship he is sailing on. When the ship tragically sinks both he and the horse survive only to be stranded on a deserted island.

Seven: SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMARRON 2002

This American animated film was released byDreamWorks. It follows the adventures of a youngmustang stallion living in the nineteenth century wild west. The film, written by John Fusco and directed by Lorna Cook and Kelly Asbury, was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. In contrast to the way animals are portrayed in ananthropomorphic style in other animated features, Spirit and his fellow horses communicate with each other through sounds and facial expressions. Not only a great plot, the soundtrack is truely stunning with an instrumental score composed by Hans Zimmer and songs from Bryan Adams.

Six: FLICKA 2006 

Young Katy claims a wild horse as her own — an effort to prove to her father that she is capable of one day taking over the family ranch. On April 25, 2006, one of the horses used in the film was killed in an accident on the set. The incident took place at the Hansen Dam Equestrian Center, located in Lakeview Terrace, California. Days later, another incident took place that resulted in the death of another horse.
