Piggy French wins the Olympic test event for eventing, partnering DHI Topper W she dominated the event in all three phases leading from the off! French was one of three riders to go inside the time in the cross-country phase, around the course which was designed by Sue Benson.
Piggy French and Topper sealed the deal by jumping clear in the second round of show jumping on Wednesday 4th July, day three of the event.
The British camp celebrated as all three British riders jumped clear in the second round with Pippa Funnell finishing in third spot, giving Great Britain the team victory on top of the 1st and 3rd individual placings.
Ahead of the final phase, there was a vet inspection, at which there were a few tentative moments when Piggy’s ride was put into the holding box. Luckily after a thorough inspection, the horse passed and went forward to the showjumping with two fences in hand – although these weren’t needed as she rode a fault – free round.
The venue, Greenwich Park, was chosen for its close proximity to the heart of the Olympic games. There was a lot of positive feedback from many of the spectators in attendance, many of whom now can’t wait for the real thing next year! Organisers are using the three-day eventing competition to test the park’s capabilities and ahead of next years Olympic event.
The final results: TOP THREE
1. Piggy French and DHI Topper W
2. Michael Jung and River of Joy
3. Pippa Funnell and Billy Shannon
